Wimborne is home to so much more than our gorgeous development. The market town has a fascinating history, including an affiliation with Victorian novelist, poet and author of Tess of the d’Urbervilles. Thomas Hardy, who lived in Wimborne in the 1880s, based fictional locations in his book Two on a Tower on Wimborne.

Visitors to Wimborne today can visit the Minster Church and its Chained Library, whose oldest book dates back to the 1300s. The Library, which was of the first public libraries in the country and is one of only four chained libraries remaining in the UK today, also contains a book of sermons belonging to Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon.

If you’re looking to delve even further back into Wimborne’s history, the Archaeology Gallery at Wimborne Minster’s Priest’s House Museum is brimming with discoveries from the surrounding area. The Museum gives visitors a real sense of history with its recreations of a Georgian Parlour and Victorian Schoolroom.

For those who are in search of outdoor activities – why not visit the historic grounds of Kingston Lacy, an opulent family home built to resemble a Venetian palace. The 17th Century mansion boats 8,500 acres featuring iron hill forts and a large kitchen garden where Queen Victoria once sent her own gardeners for inspiration. The lavishly decorated house also includes the largest private collection of Egyptian artifacts in the UK.

If you’re looking to explore some of the town’s contemporary history, the 1/10th scale Wimborne Model Town propels visitors back in time to how Wimborne looked back in the 1950s.

With the stories Wimborne has to tell, we wouldn’t be surprised if, after coming to take a look around, you wanted to make the move.
