Finding friendship, joy and Home… at Hortsley
24 September 2025

After a long career as a dog handler with the Metropolitan Police in North London, retirement was a new chapter for Brian. Brian and his wife shared a dream: to move to Seaford and be closer to their son. After sadly losing his wife before moving into their new apartment, Brian has since found a way of living that is fulfilling for him surrounded by “wonderful people”.
Living on his own was something Brian had to acclimatise to but he never expected to find a community quite like he has. Hortsley is home to 34 apartments, and while its residents are all individuals, they are a close-knit group. “I have a friend who lives alone in London, and he often tells me how lonely he feels. I can honestly say that I’ve never felt that way since moving here”. Brian tells us that there’s always someone to talk to, and a real sense of togetherness, “ I believe this is the way of the future for older adults”.
Life’s simple joys
The best thing about Hortsley is that there is always something going on. There is always an excuse for a get-together. Our Hortsley residents are always celebrating something, big or small. Birthdays are a big deal - “We all chip in to celebrate in the shared lounge with cake and a bit of prosecco”. The community also has regular fish and chip lunches that are always a favourite!
The men here have their own tradition too. On Monday evenings a group of them each bring a drink of choice and put the world to rights.
The gardens at Hortsley are another highlight, which residents can simply enjoy without any of the work or maintenance. “We have a wonderful pond and even a herb garden where we grow fresh herbs for cooking” Brian shares.
The best of both worlds
One of the things Brian loves most about Hortsley is the balance it offers. If you want time to yourself, you can easily have it. But if you're in the mood for company, there are always people around. “There isn’t anyone here that I don’t like!”. “Many of us are widows or live alone, so we have a lot in common”. This community has individuals from all walks of life with some really interesting life stories they’ve bought with them to Hortsley
When asked if he would recommend this way of living to anyone considering moving into a later living community, Brian proudly told us: “I'd recommend this way of living to anyone. It’s a far better and more enjoyable way to live”.
