The calming sound of the waves, sand between your toes, the first dip of toes in the (cold) water, pastel coloured beach huts, sandcastles, (sandy) ice creams, the smell of suncream, fish and chips wrapped in paper - the seaside, a quintessential staycation spot - and with some incredible coastline available to us to enjoy across the UK, it’s easy to see why!

For many, living by the sea is a lifelong ambition sparked by fond childhood memories and memories of holidays spent with family and friends over the years away from the hustle and bustle of work and ‘regular’ life - whilst others are lucky enough to call it home all-year round.

From keeping active and enjoying fresh air, to healthy eating and better mental health - not only can a move closer to the sea help to achieve a lifelong ambition, there are also many health and wellbeing benefits to living by the sea and choosing a coastal location to call home.

On the water, in the water, or by the water - the coastline and surrounding areas offer some wonderful ways to keep active. From fantastic coastal walks on cliff top paths (for example the Seven Sisters walk near our Hortsley community in Seaford) with their dramatic views out to sea, strolls along the promenade or dog walks on the beach to open water sea swimming, fishing, sailing or even a spot of body boarding - whatever takes your fancy, there are lots of coastal activities for all to enjoy! Why not find your next coastal ramble in our handy walking guide, showcasing some fabulous walking routes to try for yourself located close by to some of our coastal communities.

According to DEFRA1, “…open areas and coastal areas of the UK are cleanest as air changes more frequently”  - so that time spent outside enjoying that fresh sea air whilst wrapped up on a cosy autumnal coastal stroll or soaking up the sunshine by the sea during the summer months, is sure to be time well spent!

A study carried out by the National Trust2 also suggests that all that fresh air can also help you to sleep better which is vital for our health and wellbeing.

Getting outside regularly can also help us get some of that much needed vitamin sea (D) which is key to helping us regulate calcium and phosphate in the body which in turn help to keep our teeth, bones and muscles healthy3.

We all know the value of healthy eating and ensuring we maintain a well balanced diet - and this should include at least 2 portions of fish a week, including 1 oily fish4 and where better to source this and keep food miles down at the same time than from the seaside! With amazing fish restaurants, local fishmongers and seafood shacks dotted along the coast, there’s sure to be a dish to suit every pocket and palette! Our Lymington Gate community is perfectly placed for this with many a seafood dish to try in one of the fantastic local eateries!

Whilst we can’t always guarantee the sunshine at the seaside - and it often seems to rain more than we’d perhaps like it too, at Pegasus Homes we can guarantee some splendid coastal locations from The Fitzroy, Falmouth, to Woodlands, Canford Cliffs and Paignton, Devon - perfect spots for enjoying the best of the seaside all year-round and discovering the benefits of living by the sea.
