In our later living communities, community spirit is in the foundation of everything we do. Whether it’s gathering in our modern communal lounges for coffee mornings with neighbours, or relaxing in beautifully landscaped gardens and terraces to enjoy the evening sun, there is always an opportunity to connect if you wish to. Sometimes, even just a friendly wave and a warm "hello" as you walk out your front door can boost your day before it has even begun.

With that in mind, while friendship is valuable all year round, International Friendship Day on 30th July gives us a wonderful reason to pause and celebrate it. Established in 2011 by the United Nations, this global awareness day was created to inspire connection, promote peace, and foster unity and understanding.

Bringing friendships to life

At Pegasus Homes, we see the spirit of International Friendship Day brought to life every single day. From casual morning chats to buzzing social calendars, our communities naturally foster the deep, meaningful relationships that keep life interesting and fulfilling regardless of age. Our residents love to get together, and no two communities are quite the same. Here’s an insight into how friendships are made across our communities.

And the fun doesn't stop at the front gate. Many of our residents regularly organise theatre and cinema trips - just like friends Eddie and Malcolm who had never met before moving to our Lichfield Bonds community - while others venture even further afield for shared holiday breaks and cruises!

“It’s difficult to make friends as we get older,” Eddie admits. “But not here, people greet you as soon as you come in”.  - Eddie, Lichfield Bonds resident

We are proud that our spaces act as the backdrop for such important connections in later life.

Friendships blossom at Lymington Gate

“We look out for each other, day or night.”

We are fortunate to hear many heartwarming stories about how our communities spark special friendships - far too many to list! However, our recent Pegasus Portraits photoshoot at Lymington Gate perfectly captured the essence of what makes these bonds unique.

Sharing similar backgrounds, having lost their partners before moving to Lymington Gate, Dianne, Jacky, and Doreen have formed a special connection. The trio loves spending time together alongside the rest of the community; from the monthly quiz organised by the onsite team to weekly afternoon tea on Thursdays, there is always a wonderful reason to get together.

The three friends shared that living in large, empty houses before their move could feel incredibly lonely at times. By contrast, living in a later living community allows them to maintain their independence while sharing plenty of laughter along the way - something Dianne notes isn’t always the case for many people as they get older.

It’s comforting to know that our residents have built such strong, reliable support systems. As Doreen beautifully puts it:

“Morning or night, I know I can give them a call and they’ll be there, and I’d do the same for them. We cope with each other, we have a laugh together.”

Watch the video below to hear more about the trio's journey to Pegasus Homes and how they are enjoying life together.
