For those considering the best place to live in the next chapter of life, there is certainly no shortage of options. From care homes, to independent later living, to the ‘open market’ - what is the best choice for those looking for the perfect home to enjoy their retirement years?

Open market

Buying or renting a home from the ‘open market’ means the home is not affiliated to any kind of organisation or community - the home has no restrictions on who can buy it or how it can be used, and it will not come with any provisions such as care, social events or on-site staff (excluding some apartment buildings with concierge services). With an open market home, the property is solely owned by, or a rental agreement is drawn up in the name of, the occupier, whose responsibility it is to then sell the home or give notice on the rental agreement in the event of moving out.

Care home

A move to a care home in later life is typically taken due to a change to, or decline in, the resident’s health. Sometimes this may be a direct move after a hospital stay, or it may be a decision taken by the family or resident themselves if it is decided that the person needs more dedicated care for their health. For a community to be classed as a ‘care home’ it must provided not only accommodation but nursing and or personal care, all within the costs of living at that specific community or development. Some residents living in a care home will have their stays government funded, depending on their medical needs and history of the resident, whilst others may purchase or rent their homes at these facilities directly as you would with an open market property.

Sheltered housing

Sheltered housing is a specialist type of accommodation for older adults, but provides less care and support than a care home but more than independent later living developments. Individual apartments within a communal complex can be purchased or rented, and similarly to other developments there may be shared spaces such as lounges. Sheltered accommodation offers services and assistance for residents in their day to day lives, such as elements of care, meals can be provided as well as housekeeping tasks.

Independent later living

An independent later living home, such as a home at one of our Pegasus Homes communities, is a privately owned or rented property within a building or complex specifically designed and built for those over a certain age, typically 60. Independent later living homes are designed for residents’ longevity and autonomy, but with some support on hand as and when required.  Developments typically includecommunal spaces, such as a shared lounge and communal gardens, for all residents to enjoy. Independent later living developments have on-site staff teams who provide building management and support with social events and activities for residents, rather than care. Most, if not all, independent later living communities have 24-hour alarm support in every apartment or home, should residents need any assistance.

Independent later living communities are for people who are largely active and independent, and wish to remain so for as long as possible but safe in the knowledge that there are services and support on hand should they need.
