“I’ve got so much life to live” - Lynda Cant’s story

For many of our residents, moving into a Pegasus home can offer a new lease of life; and none more so than Lynda, who recently moved into her new apartment at The Vincent in Bristol. For Lynda, who is celebrating her 80th birthday this year by throwing a mini festival for 100 of her girlfriends, slowing down in later life could not be further from her reality, even when navigating the loss of her husband and overcoming her own, and her family’s grief. In fact, since making the move to her new two-bedroom resale home, she has found she has more purpose in life than ever before, and refuses to be defined by her grief.
“You can still have purpose in life at 80 years old,” Lynda tells us, “living somewhere like The Vincent has allowed me to still have a purpose, and retain my vibrancy for life.”
Lynda’s lifestyle in her new home absolutely supports her vibrancy for life. When she’s not enjoying the on-site pool, sauna and immersion therapies, she’s finding local haunts to become her new regular coffee spot, or engaging with local charities. She’s also found that since making the move to Bristol, she’s hosting friends almost every weekend, who are keen to see her new home and enjoy all that Bristol has to offer - including the river boat pub crawl!
“I’ve always been a city girl at heart,” says Lynda, “my lifestyle just would not suit a sleepy countryside home. One of the main things that appealed to me about The Vincent was the central location, the views from the community and how close I am to the city.” Bristol is somewhere that has always ‘spoken’ to Lynda, and she believes that fate brought her back to The Vincent specifically:
“One of my daughters lives close to Bristol and about five years ago we visited the then on-site restaurant* at The Vincent, entirely by chance. At that point in my life, I could never have imagined living in a later living community, but life can change overnight. Had I not visited The Vincent all those years ago, it wouldn’t have been the first place that came to mind when life changed and a later living community became something I was actively considering all those years later.”
Lynda sadly lost her husband in 2024 and knew straight away that she did not want to stay in the family home on her own. She started looking into alternative options that would suit her life and her lifestyle, and The Vincent had always been in the back of her mind since her initial visit.
“You do not give these things any thought until you really have to. I knew I couldn’t stay in our family home by myself, but also I knew I had to think about the move rationally before I thought about it emotionally. I employed some of my career experience as a business consultant to help me make my decision - a friend and I put together an entire brainstorm session to help me decide! Bristol, and The Vincent, just ‘clicked’ for me. By Wednesday I’d made my decision, by Friday I had appointed an Agent for the sale of my home, and I was at The Vincent for my first visit on the following Monday!”
“I fell in love with the old character of Queen Victoria House, combined with the lightness and modernity of the Charlotte and Jacob buildings. The high ceilings in all the homes make me feel I have so much space! After getting to know the entire community and what was on offer, I opted for a resale home, and Alex and the Resales team were brilliant throughout the whole process. I personally found no difference between a resale home and a new home - the high quality is the same in all the homes, and the view from the apartment I chose is one of the best on the development! I love the safety and security provided by the on-site team, as well as the activities and events they plan - it makes the whole community feel like a big family.”
A resale home is simply a property that was previously purchased and lived in by someone, but who has decided to sell and move on. Our dedicated Pegasus Homes Resales team have in-depth knowledge of all of our communities, and the later living market, and can act as an agent for residents in selected communities who wish to sell their property.
Since moving into her new home, Lynda is finding a balance for life inside the community as well as outside. “Everyone here is so interesting,” says Lynda, “everyone has a story to tell. It isn’t an ‘old people’s home’ - these are people still living and enjoying their lives.” Outside of The Vincent, Lynda is connecting with the local community but has also found the move to be of real peace of mind and benefit to her family: “I didn’t want to become a burden to my kids or for them to worry about me in a big house by myself. I’m their mum - I want to be able to be there for them!”
“I’ve got so much life to live,” Lynda explains, “I don’t want to waste it. I didn’t want to stay in my grief, I didn’t want to waste my life or my kids’ lives. Being at The Vincent means I can keep my purpose in life - I never expected to love it as much as I do!”
