National Pet Day is a date many of us at Pegasus Homes circle in our calendars. It’s a day dedicated to celebrating the unconditional love and boundless joy our furry, feathered, or scaled friends inject into our lives.

For those in retirement, the bond with a pet goes far beyond simple companionship. Research consistently shows that pet ownership offers copious benefits for both mental and physical health - from lowering blood pressure to providing that instant burst of serotonin after a puppy cuddle.

Here is why life at a Pegasus community is even better with a pet companion by your side.

Routine, structure and a sense of purpose

Naturally, it’s not uncommon for people to reach retirement and struggle with the sudden lack of routine. However, bringing a pet into your life will add structure to your days. Usually they wake up at a similar time, have their meals at the same time, and dogs especially require regular exercise. Having another living being to take care of each day gives life an additional purpose, something a lot of people search for when they retire and the purpose of a full time job or occupation has gone.

Pet ownership entails a range of caretaking duties which can enhance feelings of purpose. Having a dependable companion that gives us unconditional love enhances our mental wellbeing; improving our mood and outlook. The daily routine of care and dog walking gives our days structure and can also bring a welcome distraction from worries. Research has even shown that dog and cat owners laugh more daily than non-pet owners! They are also more likely to be happy (74%) than those without (66%).

The ultimate companion

They don’t call them "man’s best friend" for nothing. Even the most social individuals appreciate the quiet, steady presence of a pet. Coming home to a wagging tail or a soft purr is the ultimate tonic for a fulfilling day.

And if you live alone, it certainly doesn’t mean you have to be lonely. Pets make great listeners, they never interrupt! Having a companion who waits for you to get home and is excited to see you when you arrive, is a constant presence that makes a house feel like a home.

Movement is medicine

It is often said that ‘dogs are the best personal trainers’. Regardless of the weather, a dog needs their walk - and usually, we do too. On the days when you might not feel like venturing out, your furry friend provides that extra nudge of motivation. NHS studies show that a brisk 10-minute daily walk has lots of health benefits, such as boosting your mood, and improving sleep.

Building social connections

Pets are the ultimate ‘ice-breakers’. A morning stroll often leads to friendly chats with fellow dog-walkers, neighbours, and passers-by. Owning a pet (especially a dog) naturally expands your social circle, helping you feel more connected to your local community. If you’re new to a community, you might come across dog walking groups to help get to know new people and find your pet a new friend too!

Careful Considerations

As with any big commitment there are pros and cons to consider when choosing the right pet for you. While the benefits are high, it is important to choose a pet that fits your energy levels and financial situation. Some people may prefer adopting an older, calmer pet, rather than a high-energy puppy or kitten, to ensure the responsibility is manageable. Also there are lots of animal shelters, such as the Dogs Trust that are always looking for volunteers or The Cinnamon Trust - a nationwide charity that connects volunteers with elderly residents who need help walking their dogs. Similarly, there are apps such as ‘Borrow My Doggy’ that match you to a local dog owner where you can offer to walk their dog on mutually agreed and convenient occasions. The Trusted House Sitters app focuses on home-and-pet-sitting exchanges, allowing you to care for pets like cats, rabbits and birds without the commitment of owning your own which is great if you like to travel a lot, for example.

At Pegasus, we understand that our pets are part of the family and many of our communities welcome your four-legged companions to join us, and become a ‘Pegasus Pet’.
