At Pegasus Homes, we take pride in creating beautiful places to live in some of the most sought after locations in England, where communities can flourish. This May, we are taking part in National Walking Month, inviting our residents and colleagues to join us in an effort to walk 6,000 miles and raise £1,000 for charity.
About Walking Month
As the days lengthen and nature awakens, May marks the arrival of Walking Month – a fantastic opportunity to embrace the simple yet profound act of putting one foot in front of the other. This nationwide initiative shines a light on the remarkable benefits of regular walking; from boosting our physical vitality and sharpening our mental clarity, to simply enhancing our overall sense of wellbeing.
Here at Pegasus Homes, we're wholeheartedly embracing Walking Month with a collective stride towards better health, connection with nature, and a commitment to a cause close to our hearts. We're inviting all our residents and dedicated staff to explore the beautiful local areas that surround our vibrant communities.
The Pegasus Homes Challenge: Miles for Meaning
We're embarking on a walking challenge with a powerful purpose: to support and alleviate loneliness in older people. Every step taken, every scooter ride enjoyed, and every wheel turned will contribute to this collective goal. Whether it's a leisurely stroll to the local shops, a mindful walk around town, or an adventurous ramble guided by our brand-new location guides, every bit of movement counts.
Unlocking a World of Wellbeing: The Health Benefits of Walking
The rewards of walking extend far beyond the miles we clock. For individuals of all ages and abilities, regular walking unlocks a wealth of physical and mental health benefits.
Walking boosts cardiovascular health by strengthening your heart and improving circulation, enhancing balance by promoting stability and reducing the risk of falls, strengthening muscles by building lower body strength and endurance, reducing stress by providing a natural and effective way to ease tension, improving mood by releasing endorphins and fostering a sense of calm and happiness, and increasing energy levels as physical activity can counterintuitively combat fatigue and boost vitality.
To support this, recent research has shown that adding a daily 30-minute brisk walk was linked to an extra 1.4 years lived in women and 2.5 years in men, so now is the perfect time to incorporate a stroll here and there.
Charity Spotlight: Connecting Hearts with Re-engage
At Pegasus Homes, we deeply value the power of connection. Our communities thrive on bustling social calendars, resident-led groups, and a strong sense of belonging. We understand, however, that not everyone in later life enjoys such robust social networks.
That's why we are proud to dedicate our Walking Month efforts to Re-engage, a remarkable charity committed to tackling loneliness among older adults across the UK. Re-engage creates vital connections through monthly tea parties that spark joy and conversation, the comforting companionship of telephone calls through their 'Call Companions' initiative, and engaging volunteer-led activities. They champion the belief that age should never be a barrier to meaningful human connection.
Discovering Stunning Local Landscapes: Guided by Our Residents
We're delighted to introduce our new walking location guides, curated to showcase some of the most stunning walks right on the doorsteps of our communities, offering a local's perspective on the beauty around us. We encourage our residents and staff to explore neighbouring Pegasus Homes communities or plan enriching day trips to locations a little further afield, guided by these resources.
