Region at a glance - the South East
The South East wraps around London, from the Thames valley to the Sussex coast and the New Forest. Pegasus has communities in six of its counties beyond the capital: Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, Hampshire, Oxfordshire and Surrey.
In Hampshire alone, Pegasus communities sit in a forest village, a harbour town, a cathedral city and an inland village. You won’t lack for waterfront living - Seaford in East Sussex is a seaside town with an open promenade, and the Thames runs past Bourne End in Buckinghamshire.
Surrey ranges from Woking, with direct trains to London, to Dorking between the North Downs and the Greensand Ridge. Berkshire includes Newbury and Wokingham.
We recommend you start with two questions: which setting would you love, and how often do you want to be in London?
Why retire in the South East?
-
Pegasus has communities in six South East counties, from the Sussex coast to the Thames, so forest, sea and river are all on the shortlist.
-
South Western Railway advertises a fastest journey of 25 minutes from Woking to London Waterloo, so the capital can stay part of your life.
-
New Forest walking and cycling routes are reachable from Brockenhurst station, so a woodland day out needn’t start with the car.
-
RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey runs courses in gardening, photography, arts and crafts, so a hobby can grow along with the borders.
Retirement living in the South East
Day-to-day life in the South East depends on the town you choose. For a higher energy day-to-day, Wokingham’s Market Place has been redesigned with more room for markets, outdoor seating and local events. Bourne End might appeal if you’re looking for a smoother pace; the Thames Path and nearby Cock Marsh in Cookham offer scenic riverside walks close to local amenities.
Travel deserves the same thought. Woking has direct main-line trains to London, Bourne End sits on a branch line via Maidenhead, and local transport options connect nearby towns. The prettiest setting is always tempting, but it’s worth weighing up the journeys you’ll make most - you might find some hidden gems along the way.
