Region at a glance - the South West
The South West stretches from the Cotswolds to the tip of Cornwall, and it’s a good deal more than seaside. Pegasus has communities in six of its counties, so the first choice is how you’d like to live.
If a city appeals, start with Bristol or with Bath in Somerset. Both come with green space you’ll use: the Downs beside The Vincent in Redland, and the Botanical Gardens in Bath’s Royal Victoria Park.
For town life, Gloucestershire offers festival-loving Cheltenham and Tetbury in the Cotswolds, while Marlborough in Wiltshire keeps a market-town pace. On the coast, Cornwall has two quite different towns in Bude and Falmouth, and Dorset ranges from beach neighbourhoods around Poole to riverside Wareham.
Why retire in the South West?
-
Pegasus has communities in six South West counties, from the Cornish coast to Tetbury in the Cotswolds, so you can choose your setting first.
-
The South West Coast Path offers routes of varying length and difficulty, so a coastal walk can be gentle or ambitious.
-
Cheltenham Festivals runs four annual festivals, from jazz to literature, so there’s usually something worth putting in the diary.
-
Wareham in Dorset has independent shops, cafés and a Saturday market on the quay, so errands and a riverside walk can share a morning.
Retirement living in the South West
Everyday life in the South West depends on the setting you choose. In Bristol, a walk or a picnic on the Downs needn’t mean a trip to the countryside. By the sea, check the route as well as the view. At Canford Cliffs, the beach is close to the village shops, though some of the approaches can be difficult.
Travel varies just as much. Falmouth has a branch line to Truro, train journeys from Tetbury start at nearby Kemble, and Dorset has its own line towards London Waterloo. So think door to door, especially for family visits.
